The coast redwood below is one of the tallest in the park where it grows, amidst the region of Humboldt Redwoods State Park and Redwood National and State Parks. This image was taken May, 2009.
I'm posting this page New Year's Eve 2016, enjoying a week long sorting of coast redwood images. When I opened this file, what came to mind was how many of the tallest known coast redwoods are in some of the most beautiful spots. Chris Atkins and I measured dozens of redwood together and in most cases, those superlative redwoods were set like gemstones among incredible scenery.
This redwood has a nice little patch of vine maple beneath, which will turn yellow, orange or red in autumn. The trunk girth is similar to the that of Hyperion, another redwood I photographed, early the same year.
