I posted this page New Year's Eve 2016, enjoying a week long sorting of coast redwood photos. When I opened this file, what came to mind was how many of the tallest known coast redwoods are in some of the most beautiful spots. Chris Atkins and I measured dozens of redwood together and in most cases, those superlative redwoods were set like gemstones among incredible scenery .. often with taller ferns.

This redwood has a nice little patch of vine maple beneath, which will turn yellow, orange or red in autumn. The trunk girth is similar to the that of Hyperion, another redwood I photographed earlier in 2009. The man is Steve Sillett, a main character of The Wild Trees. Not far from this redwood, is the world's tallest Port Orford cedar.
