Forest Redwoods

Mystery Coast Redwood #1

by Mario Vaden

The huge coast redwood below is not one of the New Discoveries , but one of the giants I encountered back in 2008. I returned again in 2016 with a wide angle lens to get my first image here. Personally, I'm sitting on the fence about sharing its name, but I know for certain that someone with the parks hopes this one can remain anonymous .. an easy favor to provide. The point I hope to drive home again with the photo, is how redwoods this massive can remain hidden for so many years. Look at all the color and texture on the trunk and all around it in the forest. From 50 feet away the size is more apparent. But from 100 to 300 feet away, realizing its size becomes more obscure, especially if no person is next to it for scale.

Over the years, noted redwood explorers found quite a few coast redwoods not specifically named in books or photographed .. sometimes due to rain, dead batteries or lens limitation.
