Orick is a tiny northern California community along highway 101 next to Redwood National Park and Prairie Creek Redwoods. 43 miles north of Eureka.
Logging was once part of life for this community, but times changed.
I heard that good food could be found there, and that proved true. In fact, everybody I have met in Orick has been very friendly. Keep this town in mind when you come to hike in the northern coast redwood parks. Wi-fi is available too.
You will find redwood carving shops from end to end. Bears, burls, redwood scuptures, Bigfoot and furniture. Most, and much of the best is kept indoors. On shop had some very nice Ohio buckeye tables too.
There are several good places to eat. The best food has been from the biker restaurant Hawg Wild, previously known as the Lumberjack Inn.
The Palm Cafe and Motel across the street opens early in the morning, near daybreak. That's where the crew from National Geographic stayed for a while to photograph for the 2009 magazine and video on Redwoods. The Mexican food place was pretty good also.
For food , I rate the biker place 1st, the Mexican joint 2nd and the cafe 3rd. There are a couple of markets, and fuel has been available. There are two small markets, one at each end of town, providing food, beer and liquor.
The Redwood National Park center is at the south edge of town near the beach. That is the place to go for local redwood hiking information and permits for Tall Trees Grove near Redwood Creek.
Ask around in town for kayaking, horse riding and more.
