Myers Flat Tree Houses along CA Highway 254 known as Avenue of the Giants

This town is on CA Highway 254 known as the Avenue of the Giants. There is a Myers Flat Exit along Highway 101. And its right there, in the midst of Humboldt Redwoods. Myers Flat is 92 miles from Orick and Redwood National Park to the north. This community has a very comfortable feel.

Myers Flat was founded by the Myers family in the mid 1800s: some of the first homesteaders: serving as a coach stop for travelers to San Francisco. Much of the town was destroyed in the Eel River flood of 1964. The town still has problems with flooding: it lies below the 100-year flood line. Much of the town is trailers and cabins and some people built to withstand floods.

Myers Flat Shrine Drive Thru Redwood along Avenue of the Giants

The first place that caught my eye was the Shrine Drive Thru Redwood. Its not as majestic as the Chandelier Redwood far to the south. But the Shrine Redwood has character. It hangs on: almost in the same league of survival as Kalaloch Cedar up north past Quinault in Washington. I did not drive through, but did measure. Its sign said 275 feet. My laser rangefinder read 126 feet. If you have kids and a few extra dollars, you may find it amusing. The tree houses were rather interesting too.

Myers Flat downtown has a general store, market and coffee shop called The Daily Grind. There was also a Trading Post saloon, ntique store, gift shop, Groves restaurant, Myers Inn bed and breakfast and RV park called Giant Redwoods RV. Plus a Myers Flat Laundrymat. Because of its location as the south entrance to Humboldt Redwoods State Park, the town receives much tourism during the summer. There is wine tasting and beer as well as liquor. Events like the redwood run and music festivals bring people from all over the world to Myers Flat. On the flip side of the year, winter is cool, tranquil and quiet.
