Redwoods in Stout Grove

Geisha coast redwood

Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park

by Mario Vaden

This was my view just before discovering Tsunami, a world record hemlock in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. A few of you may have seen this redwood hanging in the Crescent City gallery or elsewhere. It's about 300 feet tall, situated in the southern half of Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. This photo took 3rd place in a 2011 Save the Redwoods League photo contest.

Among all the redwood groves I've been in, this redwood has a look that reminds me of Japan's unique looking Japanese gardens. And by coincidence, the only person I ever photographed next to this coast redwood, happened to have a Geisha tattoo on her right hip. Therefore, the idea to name this redwood Geisha.
