This redwood topic is a bit more specialized. Less general interest and maybe more cranium-like.

In Prairie Creek, Michael Taylor used his Impulse 200LR Laser Rangefinder to map the Drury Redwood. In December 2011, the first time this type of measuring was done to this redwood, it was listed as the 12th largest known coast redwood by volume. The image below is from Taylor's data as displayed in an MS Excel worksheet: representing the lower trunk, after obtaining just 2,595 data points. He did not plan to calculate wood voume until acquiring at least 10,000 more point from the bole of this huge coast redwood. The top two were side views, one for rotating and the other for tilting. The bottom is a top view looking down. The Impulse rangefinder can do a lot more than just measure redwood heights. This trunk mapping project shows that the Drury redwood still retains an average of 18 feet diameter @ 20 feet above ground level.
