The difference between designers and artistic design ability is vast. But what is experience?

Choices range from landscape architects with 5 years college and virtually no hands-on experience, to entry level Master Gardeners offering sketches. And you have one chance to choose.

If your end up split between 2 choices, maybe hire tow designers for 1 hour consultations. Then see how we read the lay of the land, the condition of the soil, and provide spontaneous ideas and answers. If you will invest $5,000 to $50,000 in landscaping, what drawback could there be to a sample hour where designers have to think on their feet?

CAD landscape design on computers lacks appeal for me. I still design by hand on 24" x 36" vellum. As long as the plan is to scale and the scientific names are right, the plan has the layout information. I work almost exclusively at residential properties, but make exceptions, like the Hyperion Suites landscape plan drawn for the Redwood Motel in southern Oregon.
