Star Ranger Station - located between Ruch and Applegate Lake in Applegate Valley: headed toward Applegate Lake.

The Applegate Valley consists mainly of Ruch, Applegate, Murphy, Williams and Wilderville. Rainfall ranges from 27 inches per year in Ruch, to 33 inches per year in Williams, to 31 inches per year at the north end closer to Grants Pass.
Applegate Valley of southern Oregon, spans from Wonder & Wilderville to the north, Rogue River National Forest to the south, Ruch to the east, and Williams to the west.
Directions from Grants Pass, take Hy. 238 from the south side of town go south into the valley. From Medford, Ashland or Central Point, go west to Jacksonville and take Hy. 238 west to enter the east edge of the valley. Grants Pass is not in the valley, but is the northern gateway. Applegate River descends from forest, through the valley to the Rogue River.
The valley is dotted with farms, vineyards and woodlands with mountains surrounding every side. Paragliders fly off a mountain between Ruch and Jacksonville; late spring until autumn, seen sailing the skies.
At the south near Applgegate Lake, feel free to stop at the restaurant by McKee Bridge - an old covered bridge.

Weekdays, on the way from Ruch to Applegate Lake, detailed maps can be purchased at the Star Ranger Station to help exploring Red Buttes Wilderness and Rogue River National Forest.
The Oregon Caves, by way of a straight line, is not far away from the west side of Applegate Valley. Some people hike to the Oregon Caves through the nearby mountains like Greyback Mountain, instead of circling around to Cave Junction by road.
Applegate Valley is a bit warmer in summer than Portland, by about 5 degrees average. Winter is not much different. Portland average near 36 inches of rain per year. In Applegate Valley, Ruch receives about 27 inches, Williams averages near 33" of rainfall, and Grants Pass just outside the fringe gets 31".
There are several vineyards in Applegate Valley. In 2007, Sunset Magazine printed an article about Applegate Valley and the vineyards. Some people compared Applegate Valley to Sonoma Valley and the way "it used to be". In 2001, Applegate Valley was authorized as another Wine Appellation.
